Who What Where

Small Scale on a Big Scale

Multi-award-winning Mikron was founded in 1972, and 2021 marks Mikron’s 49th year of bringing professional theatre to your doorstep.

Mikron is the UK’s most prolific theatre company.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our 2021 season will only be 80 venues. In a normal year, we aim to tour to 130 venues.

Anywhere for Everyone by Canal, River and Road

We tour on our narrowboat, Tyseley, in the summer and by road in spring and autumn, to every conceivable type of venue, reaching audiences that other companies cannot.

The best way of seeing what we do is to watch the brilliant mini documentary at the bottom of this page.

Mikron Miscellany 2021

We estimate that in our 49 years of touring we have:

  • written 64 original shows
  • composed and written 384 songs
  • issued over 236 actor musician contracts
  • 30,000 boating hours on the inland waterways
  • covered 530,000 road miles
  • performed over 5060 times
  • performed to over 428,000 people

We have performed at allotments, care homes, community centres, dry docks, festivals, lifeboat stations, pubs, rallies, restaurants, village halls, Youth Hostels. We’ve even performed inside a tunnel, in the bows of a docked boat, for naturist audiences and in people’s very own front rooms and even the odd theatre.

We tell stories of uniquely British things

In our 2021 season we once again explore two fascinating British stories with two brand new commissions by two new writers.

In Atalanta Forever The game is on! It’s 1920, and in post-war Britain, women’s football is big news

Explore the extraordinary world of heroic hounds, pampered pedigrees and naughty nobblers through the halls and history of Crufts, with A Dog’s Tale

What’s in a Name?

Mikron Theatre Company began when Mike Lucas, Sarah Cameron and Ron Legge took a show to the Edinburgh festival in 1963. Mikron was named after MIKe, RON
and Sarah Came RON. Mikron is the Greek word for small.

Small we were and small, in the best sense of the word, we still are.

See Mikron’s history page for more details.

We’re honoured to be one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations

Mikron is officially one of the country’s leading arts organisations for the Arts Council’s 2018-22 funding period.

To say we’re happy is an understatement – this support will see Mikron sail into our 50th year of touring!

We really wouldn’t be in this situation without you, our wonderful, loyal audiences. We thank you all.
